Coaching in general is a collaborative process designed to help someone to move forward. It's not about the coach providing all the answers or advice, as every single person is different and is the expert in themselves.

Coaching is about tangible actions, goals, and accountability. It's like having someone stand with you whilst you make the bed - after a while, it's a habit, and you don't need them there anymore.

This is why coaching is often for a limited period - our job is to work ourselves out of a job, leaving you with the skills and habits to achieve your goals.

What is Coaching?

ADHD coaching is typically coaching done through an ADHD lens. As ADHD Coaches, we have the context, understanding and skills to be able to help an ADHD-er understand how their brain works for them.

ADHD Coaches might have this context and understanding to coach someone with ADHD based on either their own lived or professional experience, or they may have trained with ADHD specialist coaching schools who might provide a specific style of coaching.

At Rhi-Define Coaching, we have both lived experience of ADHD and autism and also specialist ADHD Coach training. This means that we are able to provide that extremely important psychologically safe environment to help ADHD-ers untangle their ADHD and understand how their brain works.

In 'neurotypical' style coaching, a client is usually expected to bring their own agenda to sessions, explaining what they'd like to get out of the structured conversation that day. As ADHD-ers, we understand that people often arrive at coaching being unsure of what support they need - you might be feeling overwhelmed by all the options, or feeling unhelpable and 'broken', or like you've been 'diagnosed and dumped'.

But our coaching is very different. As a Certified ADHD Works Coach, we provide an optional framework which can be used during the coaching sessions - so there is no pressure to know what you want to focus on. The coaching framework is based on the 30% developmental delay in executive functioning skills underlying ADHD - such as self-awareness, motivation, impulsivity, memory, problem solving, and emotional regulation.

"[This framework has] been successfully used with hundreds of people all over the world to help them understand what ADHD actually means for them and how to put this knowledge into practice. It's also been adapted for trainings at companies like Disney & Google." - Leanne Maskell, Director of ADHD Works.

A lot of people come to ADHD Coaching not knowing what they should do, but just that they need to do 'something'. Of course we can still talk about other things, the time belongs to you as the Client to use however you wish, but the framework is available if you want it.
